Congratulations, you have just been sorted into one of the four houses! Say hello to your new family in the wizarding world. They are not just there to be your teammates when playing Quidditch, but they will also be the people you will be spending practically all of your time with, so why not get to know them a little?

So, are you a part of the daring and brave Gryffindors, the cunning and clever Slytherins, the compassionate and soft-spoken Hufflepuffs, might be the curious and intelligent Ravenclaws?

Each house has its own personalities, both good and bad, and those mini descriptions we’ve written above are accurate to an extent... But of course, it goes further than just those simple traits.

So, read on if you want to find out more about the house chosen for you.

What’s that? You don’t actually know which house you belong in yet?

No problem. We have here a Hogwarts house quiz for you to help find which house you rightfully belong in.

With that said, let’s talk some more about the four houses of Hogwarts.

Gryffindor

Adorned with the symbol of the lion and the colors of red and gold, a Gryffindor stands true in the face of danger.

The house of the brave and the adventurous at heart, those in Gryffindor dare to do things that would scare a regular person witless. Whether it’s flying on a broom despite never having flown before, or facing adversity and danger despite certain doom.

Gryffindors also have a strong sense of responsibility. They’ll protect and prioritize others over themselves. Their moral compass points in the right direction and Gryffindors always aim to do what is right.

However, their best traits are also what lead to their worst. In the wrong moment, their bouts of bravery and courage will instead be construed as recklessness. Their nature of acting at once leads to making impulsive and potentially rash decisions that seem good in hindsight, but questionable in the long run.

They can also be hot-headed as a result, and they can be quite stubborn on their own beliefs, unwilling to listen to other people’s opinions on a matter once they’ve made up their mind.

Despite all that, however, Gryffindors remain as true to their code of righteousness the best they can. They are not stubborn out of malice, but rather because they genuinely believe that the way they are doing things truly is the best way.

In other words, if you’re someone who is courageous, brave, with a belief of righteousness and justice, then you’ll be very much at home in house Gryffindor.

Examples of Gryffindors: Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, Ron Weasley

Ravenclaw

Their symbol is that of the eagle with colors of blue and bronze, standing in opposite to the red colors of the Gryffindors.

This is where the intelligent and curious find them in. While those in Gryffindor are bolder, especially in terms of physical activities, those in Ravenclaw find themselves more comfortable being secluded in their own worlds, ruminating, and following their curiosities.

Indeed, they are the perfect image for brains over brawn, preferring to fight with wits than with fists. And though not all Ravenclaws are born smart, all of them seek to expand their knowledge in any way possible.

This leads to them being highly creative thinkers, as well as being able to think outside the box rather than relying on conventional means to reach their goals.

But their way of attaining intelligence has a price. For one, Ravenclaws are likely to place themselves on a higher pedestal than others, and consider people from other houses as inferior, due to their intelligence. This makes arrogance a highly likely problem in this house. In fact, they are likely to even consider some of their fellow Ravenclaws as inferiors, simply by judging their intellect.

This can also lead to them being isolated and anti-social. Whether it’s preference of reading a book in a quiet place rather than hanging out with a large group of people, or just avoiding people outright due to arrogance and considering many people as inferiors, Ravenclaws end up not having the best social skills.

Nevertheless, their chase for knowledge helps in all practical matters, giving them the reputation of being the house of the wisest. When Ravenclaws says something, more often than not, they‘re right.

If you’re someone who absolutely loves learning about new things, be it random trivia or academics, and are always yearning for more knowledge, then house Ravenclaw would be a lovely family for you.

Examples of Ravenclaws: Filius Flitwick, Millicent Bagnold, Luna Lovegood

Slytherin

Their symbol is that of the snake, representing their shrewdness. Their symbol’s colors are green and silver.

Despite how many dark wizards and witches as villains come from Slytherin, this is not to say that the house as a whole is evil. It says a lot about those people, but not the house itself.

Slytherins are like Ravenclaws in the sense that both rely on their intelligence. But unlike Ravenclaws who look to expand their knowledge, Slytherins use their intellect to utilize the skills they already have to their own advantage.

This pairs well with how much ambition they have, as Slytherins aim to be the best in things they go for. As the saying goes, “Work smarter, not harder,” this perfectly fits the ethic of Slytherins.

But there’s also a good reason why many dark wizards and witches come from Slytherin, as these traits can go even more extreme than they already are.

Slytherins tend to use any means possible to achieve their goals, whether right or wrong. The important thing is that the goal they have is achieved, which may mean that they end up dabbling in dark arts or utilizing illegal and even dangerous means. They also crave leadership, which, while good, may have the end-result of making them lust over more power. This coupled with their “The end justifies the means” approach means that they will do almost anything to make themselves even stronger.

Despite all their shortcomings, Slytherin is not a bad house. When their skills are used pragmatically, Slytherins can show themselves to be able to think outside of the box, while also not being afraid to dirty their own hands when it comes down to it, something other houses might shy away from.

If you’re someone not afraid to use unconventional means to attain your own goals, while utilizing your own intellect to achieve it as efficiently as possible, then house Slytherin welcomes you,

Examples of Slytherins: Voldemort, Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy

Hufflepuff

Their animal symbol is that of a badger, signifying gentleness, love, and loyalty. Their colors are draped with yellow and black.

The underdogs. Hufflepuffs are usually looked down upon by the other houses, as they are seen as people who do not fit in the three houses, rather than being their own house. They are thought of as “weak,” while the house itself is thought of one that cannot produce good wizards.

But make no mistake; the prejudices of the houses simply mask these because Hufflepuffs are also very good in their own right.

Unlike Gryffindors, who rely on strength and Ravenclaws and Slytherins, who rely on intellect and wit, Hufflepuffs rely on simply being decent people. It does not seem like much in hindsight, but not so when you look at the other houses, which all rely on their own strengths, but are too proud to ask for help, or end up bickering among each other just to prove who is superior.

Hufflepuff is the house that will net you friends. They are the hidden players of the houses, the bass players in the band, or the backstage staff for a play. Their strengths involve being able to have a good relationship with each other and showing compassion and kindness to everyone. They hold an optimist view, thinking and hoping things would eventually get better.

They are also very modest, and humble themselves down. They are never one for bragging, unlike the other houses.

But despite that, Hufflepuffs also exhibit their own shortcomings.

There is such a thing as being too kind. Hufflepuffs are pushovers, because their kindness makes it so that they would rather stay silent than offend others by speaking their mind.

Their own modesty might also cause them low self-esteem, where they tend to underestimate their own strengths, or worse, put themselves down all the time.

Still, Hufflepuffs shouldn’t be ignored, even if they’re not as practical as the other houses in their strengths; they are able to give others the ability to continue pushing forward in the first place.

So, if you’re someone who values hard work and is compassionate to others, house Hufflepuff would very much love to have you.

Examples of Hufflepuffs: Newt Scamander, Cedric Diggory, Nymphadora Tonks

Conclusion

Each of the four houses has their own strengths, and they also have their own weaknesses, as we’ve seen here. Nonetheless, it’s up to you to make the best out of this to become the best wizard in your house that you can possibly be (alongside your new family, of course).
