After writing about businesses opening and closing in Florida for quite some time, I have learned that Floridians are usually happy when an old, vacant building gets new life since it is better than having an empty parking lot and all that comes with that. Floridians who feel that way may be happy to know that an old Sears has been purchased by a well-known developer.

About The Old Sears In The Broward Mall: The Sears in question is housed at the Broward Mall in Plantation. It closed in 2018, after serving the community for 40 years. It's currently been partially demolished. Despite the closed Sears, the mall is still home to Dillard’s, JCPenney, Macy’s, plus over 100 specialty stores.

This mall is extremely well-traveled, having been reviewed over 11,000 times on Google reviews, where it receives 4.3 out of 5 stars. Some reviewers still express nostalgia about this mall. For example, Cliff wrote:

"I attended the Grand Opening in 1979, and it's still a staple of South Florida, long after Macy's crumbled and left town. The holidays wouldn't be the same without it."

The Sale Of The Sears In The Broward Mall: In December of 2024, the Sears was purchased for $28 million by Midtown Plantation LLC, which is managed by Jon Samuel of Miami-based Midtown Group. Samuel is the brainchild behind turning an old rail yard into Midtown Miami, a thriving neighborhood.

Samuel has said that he doesn't have any concrete plans at this time. The mall itself is owned by a lender, but stores like Dillards, Macy’s, and JCPenney are owned by other parties.
