According to a senior United States military official, the Israeli military has launched missile strikes against Iran in keeping with the vow Israel made to respond to the attack committed by Iran over the weekend. While the extent of the damage is not yet clear, the Fars News Agency of Iran has said that explosions were heard in the city of Isfahan in the central region of the country. Soon following on the heels of this information is that several defense batteries in Iran fired across several Iranian provinces. There are reports that there have been explosions against military targets in Iraq and Syria as well.

These strikes appear to be contrary to urging by the United States and other allies of Israel to forgo a response against Iran for its attack this past weekend, as the fear in the international community is that this could well spark a larger conflict in the Middle East, perhaps so far as leading to a regional war. Such a conflict, should it break out, might well have a high possibility of pulling the United States into the war, given how close the alliance is with Israel and what President Biden has previously expressed as being "ironclad" support to the Middle Eastern state based on recent comments to the media. The next few days will likely determine whether tensions in the region will finally spiral out of control.
