In a significant move aimed at tightening regulations surrounding firearm sales, the Biden administration has announced new requirements for background checks, effectively closing what has been termed the "gun show loophole."

The new rule expands the definition of firearm sellers, now requiring individuals selling guns at gun shows, flea markets, and online platforms to obtain a federal firearms license. This expansion aims to bring unlawful dealers into compliance with federal law and close the loophole that has allowed some individuals to purchase firearms without undergoing proper background checks.

Officials emphasize that the rule will not affect firearms dealers who already hold licenses to sell guns but will instead prevent individuals with criminal backgrounds, including domestic abusers and felons, from obtaining firearms through illicit means.

"This is going to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and felons, and my administration is going to continue to do everything we possibly can to save lives," stated President Biden, highlighting the administration's commitment to promoting public safety.

The proposed change has drawn attention to the impact it may have on states like Indiana, where individuals have historically traveled to purchase firearms at gun shows to circumvent regulations in other states. Sean Savage, a professor of political science at Saint Mary's College, acknowledges that the new regulations could potentially impact sales in the Hoosier State, as individuals may be deterred from purchasing firearms at gun shows if the loophole is closed.

Once the proposal is added to the federal registry, the new rules will take effect within 30 days, marking a significant step towards strengthening gun control measures in the United States.

However, the ruling has faced opposition from many GOP lawmakers, with prominent Republican Senator John Cornyn condemning the move as "unconstitutional." The debate surrounding gun control remains contentious, highlighting the divergent viewpoints on how best to address firearm-related issues in the country.
