Bipartisan bill gets support from industry leaders
Legislation aimed at increasing recycling and reducing landfill waste appears to be gaining traction, as it is both picking up legislative sponsors and earning support from industry.
Senate Bill 573, sponsored by Sen. Heidi Campbell of Nashville, is named the Tennessee Waste Reduction and Recycling Act. The bill shifts the cost of recycling from local governments and taxpayers to the producers of recyclable waste.
Co-sponsors of the legislation include Republican Sens. Frank Niceley and Richard Briggs and Democratic Sens. Sara Kyle, Charlane Oliver, and Raumesh Akbari.
The Sustainable Food Policy Alliance has issued a letter of support for the legislation. The Alliance includes producers of food product waste, including Nestle, Mars, and Unilever.
“The support from the industry is a green light for advancing this critical legislation. I am confident my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will step up to support it and provide real solutions for our solid waste crisis,” says Sen. Campbell. “This is the right thing for the people and economy of Tennessee.”
