In a collaborative effort, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) successfully apprehended an organized retail crime suspect, Denayaha Duree, in Honolulu, Hawaii, after she fled the scene of a theft in San Francisco. The incident occurred on January 29, 2024, at a business located in a mall on the 3200 block of 20th Avenue.
SFPD officers from the Taraval station responded promptly to the theft report, where two unknown females had entered the store, removed items from display cases, and absconded with the merchandise when confronted by store employees. The suspects were last seen escaping into a vehicle in the mall parking lot, police said.
Following the incident, an investigator from the SFPD Burglary Unit, Organized Retail Crime Task Force took charge of the case. Remarkably, the investigator recognized one of the suspects as Denayaha Duree, a known organized retail crime offender with a prior arrest record, police added.
Collaborating with the SFPD Fugitive Recovery Enforcement Team and the US Marshals Fugitive Recovery Task Force, investigators determined that Duree had boarded a flight to Honolulu on February 14, 2024. Later that day, they received notification of her arrest by US Marshals upon her arrival in Hawaii, citing multiple outstanding warrants.
Charges are pending Duree's extradition, and she is also wanted in connection with two organized retail crime thefts in May 2023 at luxury brand stores in downtown San Francisco.
SFPD Chief Bill Scott commended the officers for their diligent work on the case, acknowledging the extensive cooperation with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Office of Correctional Safety and the United States Marshals Service. "The long arm of the law extended to the beautiful islands of Hawaii this week," Chief Scott stated, underscoring the successful collaboration and commitment to bringing justice to organized retail crime suspects.
