President Joe Biden is currently experiencing a significant decline in support within America's most prolifically Hispanic state.

As it turns out, New Mexico, which boasts the highest population of Hispanic citizens in America, has turned away from the sitting President for a number of different reasons according to a recent poll.

That survey, conducted by Public Option Strategies in collaboration with Power the Future, an advocacy group for energy workers, reveals that Biden is trailing former President Donald Trump by a margin of 57% to 41%. This marks a substantial shift from his 2020 victory of 54% to 44% in the state.

The downturn in Biden's fortunes in New Mexico appears to be closely tied to dissatisfaction among Hispanic voters. The poll highlights that only 36% of Hispanic respondents express approval of Biden, a notable drop from the 53% approval recorded in July 2022. Conversely, 63% of Hispanic voters now disapprove of Biden, compared to 43% in the same period last year. Notably, Biden had secured a significant lead among New Mexico's Hispanic voters in the 2020 election, winning by a margin of 61% to 38%.

The challenges faced by Biden in New Mexico may mirror a broader national trend, evident in widespread discontent with his overall performance. Nationally, the poll indicates that 58% of voters disapprove of Biden, while only 39% approve. Aggregated data from FiveThirtyEight reflects a similar sentiment, with approximately 39% of Americans approving of Biden's performance.

Within New Mexico, a significant 73% of voters rate the state's economy as "only fair" or "poor," with only 27% considering it "good." Hispanic voters exhibit even greater pessimism, with 80% describing the economy as "poor" and only 19% viewing it as "good." Additionally, a mere 26% of respondents believe that their economic situation has "gotten better."

The survey also sheds light on the importance of the oil and gas industry in New Mexico, with 54% of voters regarding it as the "most important" factor for the state's economic well-being. Notably, the Biden administration has taken an adversarial stance towards this industry. Sixty-six percent of the state's voters oppose government-backed efforts to transition away from oil and gas as an energy source.

The resistance to such transitions is reinforced by the sentiment that the constant attack on traditional energy sources, as exemplified by Biden's policies, leads to higher costs. Daniel Turner, the founder and executive director of Power The Future, emphasizes the impact of Biden's actions on New Mexico, stating that support for the president in this traditionally Democratic state has dwindled significantly.

Furthermore, the poll underscores the reluctance of New Mexico voters to embrace the growing push toward electric vehicles. A substantial 60% of respondents express a lack of interest in purchasing an electric vehicle, with 67% believing it will "cost them more in the long run." This stands in contrast to the Biden administration's efforts to promote the electric vehicle industry through increased taxpayer funding for charging stations and a significant initiative to enhance the country's electric grid.

In terms of priorities, the poll reveals that New Mexico voters rank the economy, crime, illegal immigration, and inflation as their most urgent concerns. These are issues on which national voters perceive Biden poorly. The collective findings from the survey present a comprehensive picture of the challenges Biden faces in maintaining support, both within New Mexico and across the nation.
