Painting an increasingly challenging picture for the incumbent President, recent findings from a newly released ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted between January 4 and 8 have revealed a significant decline in approval for President Biden's job performance.

The data showcases a noteworthy record low, with only 33% of surveyed U.S. adults expressing approval, marking a drop from the 37% recorded in the previous poll conducted in September 2023. Concurrently, the disapproval rating for President Biden has surged to a notable 58%, up from the 56% reported in September.

In the poll, ABC News accentuated the gravity of this new watermark, asserting that this approval rating stands as the lowest for any President since the period between 2006 and 2008 during former President George W. Bush's tenure.

Notably, as President Biden seeks reelection, the poll indicates that his current approval rating falls below that of former President Trump during any point of his presidency. Former President Trump, currently the leading GOP nominee for president, also garnered a higher current approval rating than Biden, according to the same report.

Delving further into the details of the poll, respondents were asked to reflect on their approval or disapproval of the way former President Trump handled his job during his presidency. The findings reveal that 41% of respondents currently approve, a decrease from the 48% recorded in September, while the disapproval rating has risen to 53%, up from 49% in the same period for the 45th President.

Also noteworthy, when comparing the perceived mental sharpness and physical health of both candidates, former President Trump led President Biden, although both experienced declines in their numbers compared to May of the previous year.

For Biden, 28% of respondents believe he has adequate mental sharpness, down from 32% last year, and 28% consider him in good enough physical health, down from 33% in the previous year. In contrast, former President Trump's ratings stand at 47% for mental sharpness, a decline from 54% in May, and 57% for physical health, down from 64% in the same time frame.

Amidst these challenges, a slight silver lining for Biden's campaign emerges in the form of a decrease in disapproval ratings for his handling of the economy. While his approval rating on the economy stands at 31%, a modest increase from 30% in September, the disapproval rating has witnessed an 8-point drop, now at 56% compared to 64% in September.

Also according to the new poll, more Americans appear undecided about their stance on Biden's economic performance. In polls spanning from September 2021 to September 2023, only 4-6% ever skipped or expressed "no opinion" regarding economic approval. However, in January 2024, this number more than doubled to 14%.

Despite these numbers, Biden's campaign has consistently cautioned against placing excessive emphasis on polls, emphasizing that it is still early in the election season.
