Fani Willis, the Controversial Fulton County District Attorney, finds herself once again embroiled in a whirlwind of controversy. Willis, who is prosecuting former President Trump and over a dozen others for a litany of election interference charges, including RICO violations, has been a focal point of scrutiny for several years since she initially announced she would be conducting an investigation and pursuing charges against a former President of the United States.

To be sure, the Fulton County cases against Trump and his associates have sparked many loudly outspoken opinions from various state officials and private citizens across the Peach State. Many of those have questioned the motivations behind Willis' zealous prosecutions, suspicious of potential nefarious undertones.

Now, in the latest twist, the legal team for Trump co-defendant Mike Roman has filed a motion to the court hearing the case in Georgia, which accuses Willis of having a clandestine intimate relationship with her own Special Prosecutor in the case, Nathan Wade.

The issue is significant because of several allegations enumerated in the petition. First, the filing alleges that because Willis hired Wade to assist in the prosecution, without consulting anyone, while she had an ongoing sexual relationship with Wade (despite his being married and having two children) that pre-dated his hiring, she overstepped her legal authority.

But Roman's allegations extend beyond the realm of a consensual affair between adults. Also in the motion, Roman's attorneys are seeking the complete and immediate dismissal of all charges against him, citing impropriety and a distinct conflict of interest on the part of the prosecution.

Further, the filing suggests that Willis violated several laws by appointing her romantic partner, who, according to Roman, lacks the qualifications for the job. He also contends that Wade's salary to date, totaling some $654,000, was largely spent taking DA Willis on extravagant vacations to "Napa Valley, California, Florida, and the Caribbean," as well as the purchase of a luxury Audi sports sedan exceeding $100,000.

Finally, the court papers also allege that Wade's salary and the appointment to the position he received directly from Willis, without any approval from any other county personnel, constitutes fraud since Willis herself directly benefitted from the hire and, more precisely, the money it generated.

On Sunday, Willis decided to speak about the allegations for the first time since Roman's motion was filed. What's more, Willis decided to break her silence while attending church at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta.

Notably, she neither confirmed nor denied the accusations outlined in Roman's court filing. Instead, she defended the qualifications of the Special Prosecutor, without explicitly mentioning him by name. Willis also opined that the ire directed at her, particularly from GA Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene, who filed an official complaint, with Governor Brian Kemp's office alleging malfeasance by Willis, was somehow racially motivated since the allegations levied by Roman and Greene are only against two people of color.

In her 30+ minute speech to the church congregation, which was recorded as well, DA Willis had this to say:

"They only attacked one. First thing they say, 'Oh, she's gonna play the race card now, but no God, isn't it them that's playing the race card when they only question one?"

She went on to praise Wade without ever mentioning his name. Instead, she referred to him as:

"...a great friend and a great lawyer." She even referred to him as a "superstar."

During her speech, Willis also emphasized that the other two prosecutors on the case, Anna Green Cross and John Floyd, are both white. She noted that the allegations have only surfaced against the two prominent black members of the prosecution—herself and the unnamed Special Prosecutor.

For their part, Roman and his legal team were unimpressed by the DA's church speech. Roman, a former official in the Trump 2020 campaign, had this to say about her remarks:

“The district attorney chose to appoint her romantic partner, who at all times relevant to this prosecution has been a married man. The biggest difference between Ms. Cross, Mr. Floyd, and Mr. Wade is that Ms. Willis is not in a relationship with Ms. Cross and Mr. Floyd.”
