Three US Army soldiers have been killed and more than 30 more injured following an attack by a Islamist extremist group linked to Iran attacked via a drone strike there location at a small outpost in Jordan. These are the first American soldiers killed in the Middle East since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas. A significant escalation of the violence that has been occuring between the US and Iranian proxies in the Middle East, many of whom have followed Iran in professing support for Hamas in its war against Israel, this latest action increases the risk of a regional war in the Middle East still further.
President Biden has already announced that there will be a response by the US to this attack. As things stand, no strike has yet been carried out, but US officials are reportedly working hard to identify the specific group behind the attack, which they have narrowed down to one of several Iran-backed groups, that they might be held responsible. What the US response might be has yet to be seen, but we can expect it to be similar in approach to actions being directed against the Houthis for their continued attacks in recent weeks.
