On December 15, 2023, UC Riverside will host a virtual roundtable to discuss the campaign to remove the "exception clause" from the California Constitution. This clause allows using "involuntary servitude" as a punishment for crime. Concerns about its impact on human rights, justice, and rehabilitation have been raised. The roundtable will focus on these concerns and their potential solutions.
The roundtable will unite people who were once in prison, including activists, teachers, lobbyists, students, and organizers. They will share their personal experiences and expertise to analyze the impact of the "exception clause" on people in prison and society.
Their goal is to find ways to make the system more fair, equitable and focused on rehabilitation. Ultimately, they want to eliminate the "exception clause" from the California Constitution to address problems with the criminal justice system.
UC Riverside is committed to including those directly impacted by the prison system in policy and social change discussions. The university values the importance of real-life experiences in shaping policy and creating social progress. This event demonstrates UC Riverside's dedication to giving a voice to those who have experienced incarceration.
This discussion aims to raise awareness about prison slavery, push for policy changes, and work towards a more fair and just society. By having open and honest conversations, we can spark meaningful dialogue and take transformative action against prison slavery.
