A daring operation led by Tooele police officers resulted in the life-saving rescue of a 12-year-old girl trapped in a sinking vehicle at the Settlement Canyon Reservoir.

An Unfortunate Incident

In an unexpected turn of events on Saturday afternoon, a vehicle carrying a child veered off into the Settlement Canyon Reservoir, south of Tooele. The vehicle quickly sank, leaving a 12-year-old girl trapped inside, reported Tooele City Police Cpl. Colbey Bentley.

Quick Response and a Successful Rescue

Responding swiftly to the urgent situation, the officers on duty plunged into the reservoir, reaching the submerged vehicle. Despite the vehicle being entirely underwater and initial difficulties in accessing it, their relentless efforts finally paid off when they managed to shoot out one of the windows.

With the vehicle now accessible, they were able to retrieve the unconscious girl, who was not breathing at that point.

Timely Medical Attention

Once on the shore, officers immediately initiated CPR on the girl. By the time paramedics arrived, she had begun breathing, although she remained unconscious. She was quickly transferred to a local hospital and then moved to a Salt Lake-area hospital, where she was declared stable.

The girl’s survival is attributed to the officers’ presence at the reservoir during the time of the accident. Bentley stated that without their prompt response, the girl’s chances of survival would have been slim.

Investigation Continues

While witnesses claimed the car was moving at a fairly slow speed when it entered the reservoir, the cause of the crash is still under investigation. More updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
