A rare white bison, an incredibly unique creature with its furry white coat, has been born in the United States. Revered as sacred by indigenous peoples, this animal is exceptionally rare, with only one in ten million individuals being white.

This newly born white bison in the USA remains nameless for now. Residing in Wyoming's Bear River State Park, spanning approximately 0.4 square miles, the calf shares its habitat with its mother. The park announced on Facebook on May 16th:

Born this morning, the calf appears mainly white!

Despite its tender age, the calf appears to be in good health according to Tyfani Sager, the park's director, in an interview with the regional magazine Cowboy State Daily. Determining the gender of this rare animal remains challenging due to its thick fur. The mother of the calf, named Wyoming Hope, also possesses a light-colored coat.

The National Bison Association confirms the extreme rarity of white bison, occurring in only one out of ten million cases. Indigenous tribes, such as the Lakota Sioux, consider the birth of a white bison to be an auspicious sign.

Bear River State Park clarifies that the newborn calf is not an albino but carries a genetic disposition that results in its white coat. This occurrence is not unusual, as most modern-day bison possess cattle genetics. Due to near extinction in the late 1800s, bison were crossbred with cattle. Nevertheless, the birth of a white bison remains a remarkable event.

The arrival of this extraordinary white bison has attracted an influx of visitors to the park. Images of the animal have gained significant popularity on social media. It is, however, essential to respect the park's emphasis on not disturbing the animals.

In 2021, the park welcomed two white female bison. Nonetheless, this few-week-old calf is the first white bison to be born in the area.
