Coinbase, Paypal and Ethereum Foundation are among the inaugural Crypto 40 category leaders.
Fortune magazine has launched the inaugural Fortune Crypto 40 with its April/May 2023 issue. The ranking names the top five companies and organizations in each of eight different categories in the crypto currency space, as well as related areas of business and innovation.
"We honor a wide range of businesses—from VC firms to NFT shops to data companies to decentralized protocols—that have created major enterprises around blockchain technology," said Fortune Crypto Editor Jeff John Roberts, in a press release announcing the new rankings.
The Fortune Crypto 40 joins the The Fortune 500™ and a series of other Fortune magazine lists that seek to benchmark, highlight and rank corporate performance and reputation across multiple sectors.
The eight Crypto 40 categories are: CeFi (centralized finance); TradFi (traditional finance); VC; NFTs; Data; Infrastructure; DeFi (decentralized finance); and Protocols. This division allows for better comparisons among similar entities, such as venture capital firms and centralized crypto companies.
The crypto rankings use "an array of empirical metrics, coupled with surveys of more than 200 financial executives conducted by Researchscape," according to Fortune's official announcement. The magazine partnered with economist and crypto journalist Rob Stevens to develop a methodology for ranking crypto's major players.
The inaugural Fortune Crypto 40 ranks the following companies and organizations at the top of each category:
- CeFi: Coinbase
- TradFi: PayPal
- VC: Polycain Capital
- NFTs: OpenSea
- Data: Chainalysis
- Infrastructure: Ledger
- DeFi: Uniswap Labs
- Protocols: Ethereum Foundation
