(Arapahoe County, Colo.) An Aurora man will remain behind bars for a violent assault on his wife after the Colorado Court of Appeals denied his second appeal on March 16.
Cordell Dominick Robinson, 43, was sentenced to 84 years in the Department of Corrections in September 2011 for the violent 2008 assault of his wife, Michelle Gomez, 43. He was resentenced to the original sentence on March 3, 2021, after he appealed the case on Oct. 25, 2011.
The judgment was affirmed by the court of appeals on July 31, 2014, but Robinson persisted in his appeal, filing several motions including several regarding the Colorado Rules of Criminal
Proceedings to request a reduction of severity in sentence leading to a second appeal filed on Sept. 27, 2021. The court denied his appeal on Thursday.
An Arapahoe County District Court jury convicted Robinson on Aug. 20, 2010, of first-degree assault, second-degree assault on a peace officer, attempted assault on a peace officer, and 2nd-degree kidnapping.
According to law enforcement, Robinson and Gomez were arguing in Gomez’s vehicle on the evening of November 27, 2008. Gomez was driving the pair to the area of S. Irving Street and S. Hooker Street in Sheridan.
They were heading home from a Thanksgiving celebration held at Gomez’s parent’s home, where Robinson had been drinking.
During the argument, he accused his wife of cheating after finding a pair of underwear in the vehicle.
When Gomez denied cheating on Robinson, he backhanded her across the face. Gomez then pulled the vehicle over and told the defendant to get out.
He refused and punched and choked her until she lost consciousness. Gomez woke up when he dragged her out of the car and continued to punch and assault her.
Gomez attempted to enter her car to escape, and Robinson attempted to slam her head into the vehicle. She then tried to walk toward the Sheridan Police Department, which she knew was nearby. Robinson was able to throw Gomez into the back of the car, yelling, “It’s all your fault.”
Robinson’s assault continued as she attempted to escape the car. Robinson reportedly “took off” rapidly, striking a patrol officer’s door as the officer exited their driver’s side door, injuring the officer.
Robinson continued driving recklessly, striking a witness’s vehicle, which was stopped at a traffic light, severely damaging the witness’s and Gomez’s vehicle.
Robinson headed west on U.S. 285 and sideswiped a marked Denver Police cruiser. He then went north on South Federal Avenue, where his hood popped upright, blocking Robinson’s view of the road.
Despite the danger, Robinson continued on U.S. 285, where he began throwing objects at the pursuing Sheridan patrol cars.
In the 6100 block of U.S. 285, the defendant swerved onto the right shoulder, running over a fence, down an embankment, and onto the Frontage Road.
Gomez suffered serious bodily injury from the assault.
