A California Highway Patrol Officer attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on Highway 135 near Graciosa Road in Orcutt on Sunday Evening. The driver accelerated even faster once the officer attempted to pull him over and after a brief time the driver attempted to turn south onto Harris Grade Road towards Lompoc.
The vehicle left the roadway and into very thick mud and became stuck. The driver got out and ran into an open field and despite there being nowhere to hide or a way to escape the driver kept running and slipping in mud.
An officer observed the driver throw an object in a field and a firearm was recovered in the same area.
Several deputies from the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office responded to assist and a quick containment was established and officers watched as the suspect tired himself out running back and forth.
A Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputy K9 team arrived and made their way into the field. The driver then decided to indicate he was done running and was going to come to officers, in the opposite direction of the K9.
The driver was taken into custody without any incident just as another K9 team from California Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as California Highway Patrol's Air Support Helicopter.
The driver was arrested for failure to stop for law enforcement and possession of a firearm.
The man arrested is presumed innocent and no additional information on his charges are known at this time.
