The Air Current reported on Sunday that a United Airlines plane almost crashed back in December. To the shock of travelers on board, a flight departing Hawaii took an unexpected plunge into danger. Only minutes after takeoff, data recently revealed that the aircraft dropped over 1,000 feet — barely skirting disaster and avoiding a dip into water below.

Flight 1722 took a turn when, just over one minute after departing Kahului Airport in Maui on its journey to San Francisco International Airport, the Boeing 777 jet suddenly began a steep dive towards the Pacific Ocean.

In the blink of an eye, the plane plummeted from 2,200 to 775 feet above sea level. That's more than a thousand feet at breakneck speed in under 20 seconds. The jet descended at 8600 feet per minute.

After experiencing this sudden upset in altitude, the plane successfully regained its original flightpath and safely made it to San Francisco. The crew took made sure to let the Federal Aviation Administration about the incident.

Following an incident on one of its flights, United Airlines took proactive steps to ensure the safety of those onboard by providing additional training for their pilots. A spokesperson from the airline was quick to emphasize that there had been no underlying problem with the plane itself.
