An area resident is currently in search of a new kidney, and he is looking to the greater Delaware Valley to help him find an eligible donor.
Don Brown, a resident of Bucks County for more than 21 years, suffers from stage-five kidney disease and is in search of a living kidney donor.
Next month, he will undergo surgery to remove one of his kidneys, leaving him with less than eight percent kidney function and likely having to start dialysis.
A retired engineer and entrepreneur who now spends most of his time helping others, Brown has launched an extensive campaign to find a living kidney donor.
Brown’s philanthropic past includes:
- Founding the Widows/Widowers Support Group of Bucks County Widows, with nearly 400 members
- Advising Rest Connection, a Women’s Support Group serving Montgomery and Bucks Counties
- Actively mentoring young entrepreneurs
His desperate hunt, with the clock ticking ever loudly, has seen him launch a billboard campaign, create radio-spot appeals, and storm social media.
A living kidney donor will allow Brown to live another 20 years.
He intends to use this precious time to build a new life with his partner and continue giving back to the community, as he has done for the last many years.
To help inspire this selfless act, the National Kidney Foundation cites the following facts for donors:
- In 2021, 6,542 living donors in North America donated kidneys and have reported a profound sense of gratitude and fulfillment.
- At any given time, nearly 100,000 people in the U.S. are on the waiting list for kidney transplants
- Donors do not have to be a match to donate a kidney
- It is well documented that a healthy, normal life can be lived with having only one kidney
- Voucher programs guarantee that a donor (or member of his or her family) would be first in line for a kidney, should the remaining kidney eventually (and ironically) fail
- All costs to the donor are covered
