I'm not looking for purely subjective answers like 'food.' Chicago has great food but so doesn't a ton of other big cities.
I'm looking for the 1 or 2 things that set Chicago apart on a national or international basis.

deepinthecoats: Kind of an intangible one, but: having a balanced economy. There have been several studies concluding that Chicago has one of the most resilient urban economies because it’s highly diversified, and not dominated by any one type of industry. Hard to quantify that in daily life, but it definitely helps keep the city on its feet and protected from downturns in any particular industry, which is definitely not the case for cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Detroit, Houston, Washington, etc…

ChicagoTRS1: Public access to the waterfront...It could be even better (remove/elevate/underground LSD)...but it is better than any large North American city I have been to...
