The influence of the military-industrial complex on U.S. foreign policy poses a threat to democracy, as defense contractors prioritize profits over the well-being of citizens and perpetuate a culture of perpetual war. Despite Eisenhower's warning over 60 years ago, the problem persists today, with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine serving as a stark reminder of the need for greater awareness and action to safeguard democratic values and prevent the erosion of citizens' rights.

Eisenhower recognized the potential danger posed by the growing armaments industry, which was relatively new at the time. He understood that a massive military-industrial complex could exert undue influence on the nation and that the United States had previously relied on its ability to rapidly mobilize its industry for wartime production. However, with the increased complexity and specialization of modern warfare, the country had been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of enormous size. As a result, the United States now spends more on military security than the net income of all American corporations combined, a development that highlights the extent of the military-industrial complex's influence on our economy and society.

Eisenhower saw the danger posed by the military-industrial complex not only in terms of its lobbying power and economic influence but also as a threat to the very fabric of American society. His personal diary and letters to friends reveal his persistent concern about the increasing militarization of U.S. foreign policy and the impact it could have on the country's character. Eisenhower believed that excessive military spending was a "sterile" endeavor that could lead to a society valuing safety and arms at the expense of critical social institutions such as schools, infrastructure, and safety nets. In his view, this would represent a total threat - even a spiritual one - to the ideals and values that made America great.

Resources for this arms industry come from the American people and if the arms industry is large, that burden becomes consequential. The more you finance the military, the less money you have for other priorities. With people profiting from armaments and their development, there is inevitably the push for more weapons, as we can see with the war in Ukraine.

Eisenhower’s words were not only prophetic but what he was warning us about can be seen playing out in real-time at this very moment. A vast majority of our elected representatives are pushing billions of dollars of OUR money to pay for a war in Ukraine while at the very same time telling us that our Social Security benefits are at risk.

Adjusted for inflation, US national security spending has more than doubled since Eisenhower left office. Year after year, the defense budget appears to rise – irrespective of whether the country is actually fighting major wars, regardless of the fact that the Soviet Union, the country's former global adversary, has ceased to be, and no matter which party controls the White House and Congress.

Wars have always been good for weapons manufacturers, and the conflict in Ukraine is no exception. However, it would be a jump to describe modern America as a "warfare state" driven purely by the arms industry's desire for profit.

The true catastrophe is that the US spends a staggering amount on military security, accounting for roughly half of the world's military spending. This money could be better spent on improving education and infrastructure and providing universal healthcare. Instead, it is being directed toward protecting America from threats that geography alone renders illusory.

The dangers of the military-industrial complex are not new, and political leaders have warned of them since the earliest days of the Republic. The synergy between government and defense manufacturers in the US is particularly entrenched, with many of these companies located just a stone's throw from the Capitol.

In conclusion, Eisenhower's warning about the military-industrial complex was prophetic and is playing out in real-time in the US. The acquisition of unwarranted influence by the arms industry poses a total threat to American society, from its economic power and lobbying influence to its impact on the character of the nation. It is time for elected representatives to prioritize the needs of the people over the profit margins of defense manufacturers and redirect resources toward critical social institutions that will benefit all Americans.

“Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. Together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose.”
