A young mother from New York City was shot in the head while pushing her 3-month-old baby in a stroller, sending shockwaves throughout the community.

Azsia Johnson, 20, was pushing her 3-year-old son in a stroller on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Somebody, a male suspect wearing a hoodie, then approached her from behind and shot her in the head.

Johnson was transported to the Metropolitan Hospital Center, where she succumbed to her injuries not long after. Her son was not harmed.

The gunman's identity has not been released, but authorities believe the shooting could have been a domestic violence incident. Johnson reportedly texted relatives she was planning to meet with her baby’s dad on Wednesday night so they could talk some things out, per the Daily News.

"We strongly believe it was not a random shooting. The victim was targeted," Mayor Eric Adams said. "We will bring this person to justice."

Johnson's mother, Lisa Desort, spoke proudly about her daughter with NBC New York.

"She had a child early and she was the most wonderful mother that you can imagine. She was hard working. She worked every day. She's got more credit than a 30-, 40-year-old person has. She aspired to have houses and give her children the best of everything," Desort said.

Desort also confirmed that her daughter had been in a domestic violence relationship and that he was assaulted when she was six months pregnant.

"The city failed my daughter because on January 1, my daughter called me and said she was being abused while she was six months pregnant," Desort added. "She was scared to call the police so she gave me the address. I called police."

A GoFundMe page has been created by Johnson's family.

If you are experiencing domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, or go to thehotline.org. All calls are toll-free and confidential.
