The Kentucky man who shot and injured a police officer will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Commonwealth Attorney Melvin Leonhart said 41-year-old Jonathan Smithers pleaded guilty to murder and agreed to accept a life sentence.

The incident happened near an apartment comples on East Street back on May 2. Officer Tommy Robinson responded to a report of a suspicious person just before 3 am.
When he caught up with Smithers, Smither shot the officer in the neck and fled the scene. Officer James Sparks arrived shortly afterward and administered first aid until an ambulance transported Robinson to the hospital.

Kentucky State Police: Teens Kill Family Members
During the search, officers uncovered another victim of Smithers, a female assault victim who was hiding from him at a nearby convenience store. Smithers faces other charges including burglary, and federal charges, but he is expected to take a plea deal in those cases as well.
