With 3D facial models now available to help, Virginia State Police is calling on the public to assist with a Caroline County cold case from 33 years ago.
On November 10, 1988, two hunters were walking in the woods in Ladysmith adjacent to I-95 near the 112-mile marker and they found skeletal remains, VSP explained in a Facebook post this week.
Initially, the hunters reported one set of skeletal remains, but while VSP were conducting a forensic investigation in the area, they discovered a second set of remains.
Forensic analysis confirmed that both individuals were Hispanic males who went missing between 1987 and 1988. It’s estimated that one of the men was between 40 and 60 years old and the other was between 15 and 30, said VSP’s post.
A leather belt with the word “SILVANO” tooled into it was found with the older male. VSP said the word may reference a name or nickname.
“Despite more than three decades of actively working this case, we have still not been able to identify either individual,” said Captain Norman Gray, VSP BCI Richmond Field Office Division Commander via the Facebook post.
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children & the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System created facial reconstruction models of each man in an effort to help with identification.
“We are still hopeful that someone will recognize these enhanced 3D models and help us, ultimately, find their families and let them know what happened to their loved one so many years ago.”
