#1: Every State’s Least Favorite U.S. State

Depending on where you live, you are probably going to like some places more than others. There is a real sense of hometown pride in certain places and sometimes that pride extends to not like some other places very much. All in the name of solidarity!

We’re not sure why certain American states dislike other American states so much, but hey, patriotism works in strange ways. A lot of these states disagree with one another, but it seems like they really hate California on the west coast… Even though California is on the west coast.

#2: If Each State Had a Halloween Costume

Everyone knows that Halloween is a big deal in America. Come October, you will not be able to find a single store that hasn’t got fake cobwebs and spiders hanging from the ceiling of a store. So since everyone loves Halloween so much, we have a map that depicts what each state’s Halloween costume would be.

No matter which part of the country you are from, there is a state-related Halloween costume for every part of the U.S. Whilst some of these don’t seem to be the most accurate depictions of each state, you have to admit, some of these costume ideas are so spooky because they’re true…

#3: The Most-Googled “Should I” Question in Each U.S. State

No matter how old or how experienced you are, you are always going to turn to others for advice when you don’t know all the answers. But these days, you don’t even need to speak to anyone about your problems… You can just ask Google for some advice and hope for the best.

There are many different responses placed on the map, but it seems like there are a lot of blue and yellow responses, more so than green and red. Apparently, the American people are more concerned with “should I” questions related to health/body/appearance as well as miscellaneous questions than anything else.

#4: The Highest Paid Public Employees in America

When it comes to the type of job you hold, there are certain associations and assumptions that come along with specific professions. Many people assume that if you work in the public sector then you are not being adequately compensated, but those people haven’t seen this map.

According to this map, these are the highest-paid public employees in the United States. It is clear to see that the link between these professions is that they are all related to the education system, which in itself is a bit of a shock.

#5: Percentage of People Born Outside of the United States

It is very well known that America is not only the land of the free, but it is also the land of new opportunity. So many immigrants from all across the globe have sought refuge in this big, wonderful country full of new beginnings and opportunities.

This map outlines the percentage of people in each state that was born outside of the U.S. Each state has a different amount of non-American-born citizens, with some states really exceeding the percentage in other states by a long shot.

#6: Weirdest Food From Each American State

America is home to some of the strangest food ever known to man. And even though it might not be the most exotic of flavors or outrageous textures, it is simply shocking for many other reasons. Somehow the American people have taken every food and done something crazy with it.

We can’t even pronounce half the foods on this list, and we can recognize most of the words. That’s the thing, even though you can physically understand the words “Scorpion Lollipops” it isn’t clear that you are going to understand what that means in terms of the dish.

#7: The Most Disproportionately Popular Job in the U.S.

Do you know how people say that certain colleges are better for specific fields? Well, the same goes for certain professions having greater possibilities in certain cities and states. Once upon a time, this was based on where it made the most sense to do certain things, but these days it is a combination of a few things.

It is no surprise that most fashion designers live in New York, whilst petroleum engineers are far more common in Texas. People can be fashion designers anywhere, but New York is the place to be. However, petroleum engineers can’t just do their business wherever they please.

#8: Most Commonly Spoken Language Other Than English or Spanish

Considering that America is a country made up of immigrants that come from different countries, it would make sense that there are many different languages spoken all across the 50 states. Whilst Spanish and English are the most common languages, there are many other languages that are spoken.

Throughout American history, there have been many different waves of migration. For a while, a lot of the migration came from European countries, therefore contributing to the many European languages being spoken in America today. Whilst in more modern times, immigrants have been coming from South-East Asian countries like the Philippines and Vietnam.

#9: Top Private Employers in Each U.S. State

There are 329.5 million people currently living in the United States of America. A lot of these people need access to employment whether it be in the public or private sector. Here is a map outlining the top private employers in all of the American states, but there is one that is hard to ignore.

We know that people call America the Walmart nation, but we didn’t realize that was a relevant phrase until right now! Walmart is responsible for the employment of 1.5 million U.S. people. Whilst the healthcare and education systems take up the other half of employment across the country.

#10: Music Genre Preference in Each U.S. State

There are so many different factors that influence one’s music taste. From where you live, to the type of people you hang out with, there are a lot of different influences. Even though it is difficult to generalize a whole state’s music taste, this map has attempted to answer that very question.

Some of these results are shocking, whilst others are completely unsurprising. We don’t think anyone would be surprised by the state of California’s obsession with pop music, just like people might not be shocked by New York’s love for Rock/Oldies. It is, however, slightly shocking that more of the south isn’t crazy for country music.

#11: The Most Recognizable Brand From Each U.S. State

They say that homegrown ideas are often the most successful ones. And judging by this map of the most recognizable brand that came out of each U.S. state, there are many brands worth celebrating that were grown on American soil.

Honestly, where would the world be if California didn’t come up with Apple products? Or where would millions of people around the world drink their chain store coffee from if Washington never did anything with the Starbucks brand? This is a rather impressive list of successful American brands.

#12: Autocomplete Responses to “The United States is…”

When it comes to assumptions and associations surrounding a certain state, what better place than the internet to search for answers? Chances are that you will accurately depict the place that you are from, but when it comes to other areas, people don’t have the slightest clue…

These autocomplete responses to each U.S. state’s associations are pretty entertaining. Almost all of these assumptions found on the internet seem like they are the thoughts that people are really thinking, but are somehow unable to say out loud.

#13: Favorite Music Artists in Each U.S. State

There are so many different artists in the world today, that choosing just one favorite is like saying that you have a favorite child – impossible. The world we live in is much more advanced than it used to be, and with this advancement came great music and great talent.

It is clear to see that throughout the United States, many people are very big fans of American artists, no matter the genre. From Jay-Z to Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis, American artists seem to have a stronghold in the many U.S. states!
