Coronado City Manager Tina Friend accepted the resignation of Roger Miller, the City's former Recreation and Golf Course Director, on Thursday after a video of him using racist language went viral.

Mr. Miller and his wife, Sandra Miller, are heard on the video disparaging Asian immigrants with taunts of "America is a free country. Go back to China," and "I love that we are not Communism."

Mrs. Miller was also let go from her position as a teacher at a private Christian school in Temecula Thursday.

The termination and resignation follow a month - long investigation by the City of Coronado. A statement from Ms. Friend read in part "I am confident that we upheld our process and came to a conclusion that was appropriate."

Coronado Has a History of Issues with Race

In June of 2021, there was an incident after Coronado High School beat Orange Glen High in overtime where tortillas were thrown at players of the defeated team.

The incident was widely condemned by community leaders and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) imposed sanctions on Coronado's basketball program.

It was revealed later that the incident was masterminded by a small group of citizens and alumni operating under the moniker "InclusioNado." A separate activist group, We the Parents of Coronado, protested the sanctions.

The uproar cost Coach J.D. Laaperi his position at the school when he was terminated by the school board on June 22, 2021.
