The all-volunteer Springfield Ambulance Corps has been named the “Pennsylvania EMS Agency of the Year,” writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.
The honor comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Service Council.
“We donate our time and talents to provide exceptional pre-hospital care whenever we are called upon,” explained Springfield Ambulance Corps President Kelly Sweeney.
The Springfield Ambulance Corps is the only remaining volunteer Basic Life Support ambulance service in Delaware County. It responds to about 2,000 calls for assistance each year.
“Our membership includes college-aged students through retirees, each extremely dedicated and ambitious,” Sweeney said.
The Springfield Ambulance Corps was created in 1962. It is a 911-dispatched ambulance primarily serving Springfield Township. It’s staffed with highly-trained and certified volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians.
The corps is funded entirely through private donations, through a solicitation drive, and through payments for service.
Sweeney was also named “BLS Practitioner of the Year”.
Sweeney has been a member of Springfield Ambulance Corps since 2006. She’s been president for eight years.
“Her success can be wrapped up in 4 words–‘She leads by example’”, her co-volunteers wrote in their nomination letter.
