Lovers of history, museums, art, sports, and bourbon have known for some time that Louisville is an ideal travel destination. Although the city’s claim to fame has always been the Kentucky Derby to outsiders, locals have always known the city offers much more to see and do.

Now, some of Louisville’s favorite attractions are beginning to get national attention.

Three Louisville attractions have been in the spotlight ever since they were nominated in “USA Today’s Readers’ Choice 10Best” Contest” featured in the newspaper’s “Trusted Travel and Lifestyle Advice” section.

"We're proud to see these local attractions and hotel partners be recognized nationally as some of the best in the country,” said Jordan Skora, Marketing Communications Manager, Louisville Tourism. “Louisville is known for its diverse set of museums, events and accommodations, and we're excited to share that with visitors as we welcome them to Bourbon City.”

USA Today’s travel experts compiled a list of the top 20 nominees in contests covering food, lodging, destinations, travel gear, and things to do in several U.S. cities. Readers are asked to cast their votes to decide which attractions are the winners.

Louisville’s nominations include Lights Under Louisville, The Grady Hotel, and Roots 101 African American Museum.

Lights Under Louisville

With more than 850 lit characters and 3 million points of light, Louisville Mega Cavern is transformed into an underground holiday light spectacular for the Christmas season. Spectators drive their cars through the underground route and enjoy a 30-minute ride through part of the 17 miles of underground passageways. The Grady Hotel

Located on Louisville’s Bourbon Trail in downtown Louisville, The Grady Hotel is an historic mix of modern and vintage. The Grady is a few steps away from several Louisville distilleries, breweries, museums, and music venues. And it's a short drive from Churchill Downs. Roots 101 African American Museum

Roots 101 African American Museum was created to promote understanding and inspire appreciation of the achievements, contributions, and experiences of African Americans. Through the use of exhibits, programs, and activities the museum features African-American history, culture and art and serves as a center for collaboration to work with educational institutions and civic organizations.
