A 27-year-old man from Illinois' Kankakee County has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his mother.

Devail A. Bryant, the eldest son of 46-year-old Tomina D. Green, shot and killed his mother early Thursday at her residence in the 800 block of South Dearborn Avenue, police say.

Police have not released details about the circumstances leading to the shooting. Still, they did say that Bryant went to the Kankakee Police Department to turn himself into police, immediately after the shooting. Police officers then went into the residence and found Green's dead body.

Bryant did not live with his mother.

The police have not announced that they were searching for more suspects and have not asked the public to come forward with any further information.

According to the Daily Journal, Green's death marked the 14th homicide in Kankakee County in 2021--- the highest in years. Statistics released by the FBI last month report that more than four Black women and girls were murdered each day in the United States in 2020. That number is thought to be higher.

"Black women are at risk of police violence and systemic racism every day, all day and all night," said Marcela Howell, founder and president of In Our Own: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda, per the Cincinnati Herald. "We face the sting of racism at work, in school, on the streets, and in our own homes. We cannot escape it, nor deny racism it's too-often deadly toll. We most certainly cannot count on the criminal justice system to value our lives or deliver justice for the Black lives taken by police."
