Homicides in Cleveland have been on the rise. According to Cleveland.com, last year was the deadliest year in the city since 1982, with 190 homicides. In June, Cleveland was already on track to surpass 2020. Despite the spike in numbers, Ohio isn't even in the top five of homicide rates in the country.

Last year, the states with the highest homicide rates were Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland. However, The District of Columbia had a higher homicide rate than any state.

"When we talk to those young people, they're afraid," said Myesha Crowe, Executive Director of Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance, a group working to fight violence in the city. "They are afraid to walk to the store, to walk to their friend's home or even walk to places that are safe right now in the pandemic."
