A Virginia man pleaded guilty to the murders of his girlfriend and their two infant children.
The three murders occurred over the course of a year.
On Monday, DuWayne Warren, 27, confessed to murdering his three-month-old daughter, Evonne, in late 2019. An autopsy conducted by the Norfolk Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) noted that the infant "died under suspicious circumstances," and that the cause of death was most "suspected asphyxia."
At the time, Warren told detectives that he had co-slept with his daughter and noticed she was cold to the touch and unresponsive when he awoke.
Her cause of death was undetermined because the doctor could not rule out Evonne's injuries with those associated with co-sleeping with adults.
In December 2020, a year after Evonne's death, Warren killed his 22-year-old girlfriend, Epifani Andrews, and their three-month-old son.
Warren was watching his and Andrews' infant son for Christmas when she came to pick him up at his residence. He then stabbed Andrews numerous times and chased her. They believe the infant may have already been responsive when Andrews turned up at the home. He had beaten them both to death. An OCME shows that the infant may also have been smothered.
Andrews was stabbed at least 25 times.
Even more tragically, Damere was found to have extensive bruising on his body and on his face, scalp, neck and back. The infant also had a bite mark on his thigh, evidence of a fracture to his left arm that had already healed and several fractures to his ribs, per Law and Crime. Some of the rib fractures were new.
Warren, 27, pleaded guilty Monday morning to three counts of second-degree murder. He faces five to 40 years on each of the three murder convictions.
