A man has been arrested and charged for the killing of an Atlanta attorney.

According to CBS 46, Courtney Cox, 31, was shot on the 21st floor of the high-rise Atlantic House apartment building located in Atlanta. The apartment complex the couple had first met. Cox was found dead inside of the apartment.

After reportedly shooting and killing Cox, Jarvis Jarrette, 32, then exchanged gunfire with the responding officer. He died on the balcony of the apartment complex during the exchange. Whether he died from a round from a police-issued weapon or from his own firearm is yet to be determined.

"We received a call about 3:25 this morning," said Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant. "It appeared he was shooting both inside and outside the building," Bryant told reporters.

The GBI will investigate the death of Jarrette since it involved police officers.

Cox had been an associate with The Paul Hastings Law Firm since 2016. Her areas of practice included complex litigation and arbitration as well as investigations and white collar defense.

They released the following statement to Fox5 Atlanta.

"Courtney was a dear friend and colleague to our personnel here in Atlanta and throughout the Firm. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and we are focused on supporting Courtney's family and one another through this difficult time."

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms called out residents for posting the incident on social media ahead of calling the police.

"Please call 911," she said. "We did start receiving phone calls, but social media received information and has received more information quite frankly than we have received through our 911 center."
