A woman lost her life after her boyfriend fatally shot before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide.
Xamegga Whitfield, 25, was shot Thursday morning by her boyfriend Michael Culpepper, 20, in the road outside of an apartment, police say.
A nearby surveillance video camera captured the event. A neighbor reported hearing six gunshots fired in rapid succession.
When officers responded to a neighbor's 911 call, they saw the spotted Culpepper on his knees in the road holding a handgun. As officers approached him, he shot himself. He was rushed to a local medical center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Culpepper's Facebook page also identified him as a "Cavalry Scout" with the U.S. Army.
Whitfield died at the scene.
According to Whitfield's LinkedIn profile page, Whitfield had been working as a customer service cashier at Burger King for the past six years.
Whitfield's members said told WRAL that the couple was in the middle of a breakup.
"I guess, last night, they had got into it or whatever, and then, he had busted my mom's rent-a-car window because they were moving stuff into her house. The next morning, my mom said she was already scared," said Cierra Bell, Whitfield's sister.
"Anybody that has a family member that's going through suicide, or thoughts of suicide, or thoughts of hurting themselves, anybody that's going through an abusive relationship or anybody that's going through a hard time -- I just ask that somebody reach out to them," said Culpepper's aunt Vonshai Culpepper.
