Port Commission discusses port expansion project
The Port Commission met for a work session and regular meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 15, canceling the scheduled Open House session that was planned for Thursday. Present were commissioners Derek McLarty, Scot Henderson, Shane Smithhisler, Gay Sheffield and Charlie Lean, who led the meeting in the absence of port commission chair Jim West Jr. Read more

Nanooks beat Kotzebue Huskies in volleyball games
Last Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18, the Nome-Beltz High School hosted the Kotzebue volleyball team for two days of games. Kotzebue brought their junior varsity and varsity teams. On Friday, the JV teams competed against one another in two sets. They were playing best 2-out-of-3 sets. The Nome JV team took the win with two sets won and one lost. After the JV game, the varsity teams played against each other, playing best 3-out-of-5 sets. Nome won three sets. Read more

Alaska sees spike in COVID-19
Earlier this year, Alaska had the highest rate per capita of COVID-19 vaccinations. Now, though, the state has one of the highest rates per capita of daily COVID-19 cases. Over the weekend, Alaska ranked third in the nation for the highest number of new COVID-19 cases per capita, coming in behind Tennessee and West Virginia, diagnosing more than 2,000 cases between Friday and Monday. As diagnoses across the state rise, hospitals and health care workers are scrambling to provide treatment. Read more
