A Virginia woman's family has been left devastated after she was allegedly gunned to death by her son.
Latoya Acree, a singer and member of the True Soul band, was found fatally shot outside her home in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Her son is has been charged with her murder. Acree was shot in her upper body. Medics tried hard to save her life but she died at the scene.
Elijah D. Smith, 21, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder after being found at a hotel in nearby Four Mile Fork.
"She was really, really happy," her bandmate Caesar Roy told NBC4. "Seemed like things were just turning around for her, and this happened."
"There was a domestic argument that occurred before the shooting between the mother and son," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Smith was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Jail records show that he had been released from jail on bond and was awaiting trial on an assault and battery charge.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by her family to help.
"My sister was taken from us this past Saturday due to gun violence and she leaves behind 3 kids and a beautiful granddaughter," Shana Parrish, Acree's baby sister, writes.
"This news hit us all so unexpectedly. Toya was so full of life and doing everything that she had set her mind to. My sister had an amazing voice and wasn't afraid to bless anyone with it either! She loved to help people...was going to school to be a social worker. I know my sister loved me because she made it a point to say it every chance she got."
So far, $500 of the $3,500 goal has been raised.
