Only few candidates declare intent to run for city office, boards
Tuesday, five o’clock, was the deadline to file for candidacy in the October municipal elections and only a few candidates decided to throw their hat in the ring. Up for election is the Mayor of Nome, a two-year term, currently filled by John Handeland. Handeland declared his candidacy, and no challenger has emerged. Read more
New COVID cases are all over the region
Norton Sound Health Corporation has identified 80 new COVID-19 cases in the region over the last week as diagnoses hit record highs across the state of Alaska. On Tuesday, August 24, nine individuals tested positive for COVID-19, including six individuals in St. Michael, two in Savoonga and one in Stebbins. Read more
Governor Mike Dunleavy visits Nome to tour Port
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy visited Nome to discuss the potential Port of Nome expansion project on Monday afternoon. “We came up to have a discussion with the City Council and the Army Corps of Engineers on the potential port expansion here in Nome, and it was pretty valuable,” Dunleavy told the Nugget. “We went over some numbers, timelines, where the folks here in Nome think things are at, potential models to look at for the port, and it was a pretty good conversation.” Read more
