A man from Greenville, South Carolina, has been charged in the killing of his fiancée — who has been missing for over a year.

Thirty-two-year-old Brittany Michelle Davis was reported missing by her family in March 2020. It was around that time that 42-year-old Michael Lee Wilkerson had moved in with her.

Davis' remains were discovered in northeast Georgia in April 2021. Authorities believed she died on Feb. 12, 2020 -- two days before Valentine's Day.

Davis was last seen alive at a restaurant in Greenville before her disappearance in February 2020. Davis' mother, Melanie Holliman, says she continued to receive text messages from Davis throughout February into March.

She says one of the last texts she'd received was about Davis returning home from a trip to Puerto Rico. The distraught mother later learned that Davis had never traveled to Puerto Rico. It was then that she decided to file the missing person report.

Wilkerson was taken into custody in Buford, Georgia, after an Aug. 24 traffic stop by Gwinnett County officers. He has been charged in the murder of Davis and is in jail awaiting extradition back to Greenville, per WYFF. Before discovering Davis' remains, detectives revealed they unearthed evidence suggesting that Davis was deceased and likely a victim of foul play.

Her cause of death is unknown.

"It's sad and you're kind of sick to your stomach," Brian Paiz, a co-worker of Davis, told 7 News. "But I will say this… I'm glad that her mom who is such a sweet person and her brothers got some closure."

Paiz added, "People pass away of cancer or they pass away in a car wreck or something like that. You can kind of know what it was. But to not know where she was and how she passed away, I think that was the biggest thing that really just hurt everybody."
