On July 25, 2021, at approximately 11:44 p.m., Southwest District patrol officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of Nortonia Road to investigate a reported shooting. When officers arrived at the location, they observed a 34 year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. Residents of a home in the block told police that they heard a knock at their front door and discovered the wounded victim laying on their porch.

Officers requested a medic and the victim was rushed to an area hospital for treatment. Southwest District Shooting investigators were summoned and assumed control over the investigation. Shooting detectives learned that the victim was using his vehicle as an unlicensed taxi, also known as a “Hack.” The victim picked up a fare and drove to the 3700 block of Nortonia Road as directed. After arriving to the destination, the suspect displayed a handgun and demanded the victim’s vehicle. The victim tried to resist the robbery resulting in a physical altercation with the suspect. During the scuffle, the victim grabbed the suspect’s fanny pack. The suspect shot the victim in the face and back before fleeing the scene in the victim’s vehicle.

Investigators located property inside of the fanny pack that identified the owner.

Five days’ later police observed the victim’s vehicle in the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. The driver of the stolen vehicle was taken into custody. Investigators noted that the owner of the fanny-pack was also the driver of the victim’s stolen vehicle.

Through the course of their investigation, detectives were able to identify 34 year-old Gary Weldon as the individual responsible for the shooting that occurred in 3700 block of Nortonia Road on July 25, 2021.

On July 30, 2021, Gary Weldon was arrested and formally charged with 1st Attempted Degree Murder.

Weldon is currently being held at Central Booking.
