Ohio Woman Beats South Korean Shopkeepers over $11

Ohio State News by Ken Fulton, Crime and Justice Bureau Chief

An Ohio woman wanted for attacking two elderly Asian owners of a beauty store turned herself in and is being held on a $75,000 bond. This is not the defendant’s first assault charge.

Ebony Afzal, 25, allegedly beat the elderly owners of Chic Beauty Supply, in Cleveland, after her prepaid debit card was repeatedly declined for an $11.85 total.

The owners, both South Korean immigrants in their 60s who have been in the country for 25 years, tried to explain to Afzal that there was no money on the account.

The owners’ son says that Afzal attacked his parents and destroyed display items in anger over the declined card. Both elderly parents were injured in the attack, with the mother even losing consciousness. The incident was caught on store surveillance.

The attacker later turned herself into police and was charged with felonious assault.

She is being held on a $75,000 bond since this is not her first assault charge. There is a no-contact order in place between Afzal and her elderly victims should she post bail.
