(AUSTIN, Texas) As of Sunday, it has been 55 years of the Texas Tower shooting that occurred in 1966.

The shooting killed 17 people, including the shooter's mother and wife before going up to the clock tower, according to ABC13.

The gunman, Charles Whitman, brought pistols, rifles and a sawed-off shotgun to the deck of the clock tower where he opened fire on students below.

Thirty-one people were injured in total.

Two Austin police officers, Houston McCoy and Ramiro Martinez, with two other men, cornered Whitman before shooting him to death on the observation deck.

A memorial at the university was unveiled in 2016 to honor the victims. An existing garden just north of the tower was also dedicated as a tribute.

According to a UT History Department compilation from 2016, the shooting brought major changes to the university, including the first campus police force and changes to mental health services. However, both have come under fire from students in the past decade for not doing enough.
