Rhode Island State News by Ross Madison

On July 17, 2021, while driving home from work, Eliza DeAngelis was tragically hit head-on by a drunk driver. By some miracle, she survived this horrific crash- but she sustained a long list of life-threatening injuries and is requiring ICU level of care.

She has undergone surgeries to repair a tear in her aorta, a broken femur, a shattered pelvis, and the removal of her spleen. She also has a fractured neck, facial fractures/breaks, rib fractures, two punctured lungs, and fractured L5 vertebrae.

Her family says Eliza has the kindest heart, the sweetest soul, and the most gentle demeanor. She’s selfless and always puts the needs of others before her own. Eliza is a devout vegan and she has great compassion for animals and the environment. She’s passionate about fitness along with health & wellness. Eliza is also studying nutrition at URI.

Eliza’s hospital stay and the road to recovery will be long and hard; her recovery will include a lengthy stay in the hospital ICU, then on to an acute nursing home, and another extensive stay at a rehabilitative center.

Though she’s still in critical condition in the trauma unit, "she’s fighting hard in her true Eliza warrior fashion."

Eliza remains intubated and sedated- now battling a bad case of pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). She is receiving antibiotics around the clock and the ventilator is providing a lot of support for her breathing.

The family has established a GoFundMe page.

Here's what her supporters are saying

Joseph Pease: This donation is from Pamela Brightman, Kathleen Tenczar, and Joe Pease. Pam and Joe were the first vehicle to approach the accident from Rt 6 West. Pam called 911. Our thoughts are with Eliza and her family at this difficult time.
