(AUSTIN, Texas) On Monday, Austin Independent School District announced it will offer virtual learning options for certain students starting in the fall.

A special meeting will be held by the Board of Trustees, Monday at 5 p.m., to discuss COVID-19 protocols and changes to the upcoming school year, according to KVUE.

An hour will be dedicated to public comments. More information on giving public comments over the phone can be found on the Austin ISD website.

Austin ISD is one of other local school districts encouraging mask-wearing as COVID-19 cases rise and the delta variant continues to spread throughout the state and country.

In June, Austin ISD previously announced no virtual options would be offered for the upcoming school year starting in the fall. On Monday they said virtual options will be offered for those in kindergarten through sixth grade, with more details being released July 30.

Teachers who will teach in person and virtually will be separate.

Rep. Vikki Goodwin (D-Austin) and 31 other Texas lawmakers sent a letter asking Gov. Abbott to allow mask mandates at school along with virtual options. Gov. Abbott issued an executive order in May stating no government entities and school districts could enforce a mask mandate after June 4, 2021.

The Austin ISD meeting will be streamed live on the school district’s website.
