Massachusetts authorities are reaching out to parents using a popular child care website whose children may have been exposed to child pornography by a nanny who is now facing charges.
According to Suffolk County's district attorney's office, Stephanie Lak, 36, recently sought work as a nanny through the website Care.com. Anyone who might have been in contact with her is urged to contact the FBI.
An arraignment was held for Lak on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography. After getting a tip that images of sexual abuse of children had been shared by an internet user, Massachusetts FBI and local police began investigating.
According to the Massachusetts district attorney's office, Lak admitted to sending and receiving at least 100 files of child sex abuse material and talking online about child abuse.
Lak was also known to use Sittercity.com, according to authorities.
The investigators later discovered she used other aliases with Care.com under the names Stephanie Lak and Stephanie Germaine.
In order to inform police of possible victims, parents and guardians should email Lakinvestigation@fbi.gov.
In a statement, Suffolk County Massachusetts District Attorney Rachael Rollins stated, "This individual got access to kids by gaining the parents' trust." "Although she has not been charged with physical abuse, we are investigating whether any of the children she looked after were harmed in any way."
