(WEST CALDWELL, N.J.) An 80-year-old woman is in recovery after she was stabbed in her own home in New Jersey on Monday, according to ABC 7.

The incident took place shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Gray Street in West Caldwell.

Officials said they were alerted via a 911 call from an individual who said a woman equipped with two knives was banging on her door and trying to enter her home.

The caller told police the woman was last seen entering another home across the street.

Responding officers heard screams from within that home, where they located 43-year-old Laila Alayat brandishing two knives and the 80-year-old victim suffering from gashes in the living room.

Officials were able to hold Alayat's attention for enough time that allowed the victim to exit the home. Alayat later dropped her weapons and surrendered before the police.

The 80-year-old underwent deep wounds to her hands and a slash across the chest. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.

No one else was inside the home at the time of the incident. Police searched through the surrounding homes and reported no other victims.

Alayat faces multiple charges including attempted murder, burglary and weapons offenses.
