Four Long Islanders head to 2020 Tokyo Olympics to represent Team USA

(TOKYO) The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, after being delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will formally kick off Friday with the opening ceremony, though some events begin Wednesday.

According to Long Island Press, four athletes hailing from Long Island will compete for Team USA, one in soccer, one in rowing, one in diving and another in basketball.

Crystal Dunn

Crystal Dunn will make her second appearance at an Olympics with the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team.

From Rockville Centre originally, the defender grew up in New Hyde Park and won five different Player of the Year awards as a high school senior, according to U.S. Soccer.

She went on to win the 2012 NCAA Championship with the University of North Carolina and claim the Hermann Trophy, awarded to college soccer's best male and female players. That same year, she helped the U.S. win the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Japan.

She turned pro after college, joining the National Women's Soccer League, and later helped the national team win the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Dunn is expected to play when the U.S. Women's National Team takes on Sweden at 4:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

Kristine O'Brien

Kristine O'Brien will make her first appearance at the Olympics for Team USA after years of winning medals at the World Rowing Championships and an illustrious high school and college rowing career.

The 29-year-old rower grew up in Massapequa Park and graduated from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip.

According to U.S. Rowing, O'Brien, nicknamed "O'B" or "Tini," will compete in the women's eight rowing event, which begins on Saturday at 10:20 p.m. ET (11:20 a.m. Sunday local).

Andrew Capobianco

Andrew Capobianco, from Mineola and Wantagh, will join the men's diving team for his first Olympics and compete in the men's 3-meter synchronized springboard event on July 26 and the men's 3-meter individual springboard dive on Aug. 3.

According to Team USA, in the 2019 World Diving Championships, Capobianco came in 8th in the synchronized 3-meter and won bronze in the mixed team event.

As a seventh-grader in 2011, he won a Nassau County diving title with Wantagh High School and broke a 22-year-old county diving record.

Sue Bird

Sue Bird, one of the most accomplished basketball players of all time, will head to her fifth Olympics for the U.S. Basketball Women's National Team.

She won gold with the team in the four previous Summer Olympics and has earned a total of nine medals between the FIBA Basketball World Cup and the Olympics.

Look for Bird on July 27 at 12:40 a.m. ET when Team USA squares off against Nigeria.
