Ohio grieves along with the Akron Zoo with the loss of their beloved snowy owl, Hedwig.
The zoo released this statement:
We are sad to share that our female snowy owl, Hedwig, recently passed away due to an aggressive condition.
Hedwig moved here to the Akron Zoo in 2018. Her birthdate and age were unknown. She was injured in her native habitat and was unable to be re-released due to her injuries. We were happy to give Hedwig a home and we will miss seeing her.
Our male owl, Frost, remains in the snowy owl habitat daily.
About the Snowy Owl:
The snowy owl is native to Eurasia and winters in Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and areas of Norway and Sweden.
They are the largest species of owl and the heaviest of any bird, weighing up to 55 pounds and standing 2.7 feet tall.
In more temperate regions, they are found in large groups of up to 40 individuals, which can include owls, eagles, and other birds of prey.
The snowy owl is a very popular attraction at zoos. Since 1999, they have been acclimated to zoos in North America and Europe. They are often the subject of videos and photos taken by zoo visitors.
These big, flightless, white birds are also good pets. If you can’t keep one as a pet, consider trying to donate to a reputable zoo or adopt one.
