Antigone Books
Described as 'America's First 100% Solar-Powered Bookstore', you can find Antigone Books at 411 N. 4th Ave in Tucson.
The bookstore actually has some pretty interesting history: it was opened in 1973 and it was established by three women who decided to name the bookstore after the character from Greek mythology, Antigone. Antigone defied male characters in her story, which is what made her so inspiring for the founders of Antigone Books in Tucson. After Kate Randall and Trudy Mills were the owners for a good thirty years, there are new owners who have taken over the place now.
The official website of Antigone Books in Tucson tells the story of Antigone, which can inspire and empower other women as well:
"Antigone (an-tig'-uh-nee), the devoted daughter of Oedipus, king of Thebes in Greek legend, was also the heroine of one of Sophocles' greatest dramas. According to the legend, when Oedipus blinded himself after his marriage to his mother was revealed to him, Antigone shared her father's exile near Athens. After his death, she returned to Thebes and attempted, with her sister Ismene, to reconcile her quarreling brothers Eteocles and Polynices. Both brothers were killed, but her uncle Creon, now king, forbade the burial of Polynices because he had betrayed Thebes. When Antigone secretly buried her brother against the edict of her uncle, she was walled up alive in a tomb."
Save the walling up bit, the story sounds quite fascinating. No wonder the founders chose Antigone as the name of their Tucson-based bookstore.
At the time of writing this article (15/07/2021), the bookstore is open for browsing. You do need to observe the Corona rules, of course. This amazing bookstore in Tucson is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 AM and 5 PM, and on Sundays between 11 AM and 4 PM. It's closed on Mondays.

Mostly Books
Another great independent bookstore you can visit in Tucson is called Mostly Books. It's located at 6208 E. Speedway in Tucson.
At the time of writing this, Mostly Books is open for browsing and shopping. You do need to wear a mask the whole time while you're shopping, and there's also a limited number of customers that are allowed in at a time. At the moment, there are not any events taking place, however, the website says that the bookstore has a book club that meets online.
Some of the Current Staff Reads include for example "The Final Support Group" by Grady Hendrix or "The Forest of Stolen Girls" by June Hur. If you're interested in buying new releases, you can buy for example "The Wolf and the Woodsman" by Ava Reid.
Mostly Books in Tucson is open from Monday to Friday between 10 AM and 5 PM, and on Saturday from 10 AM until 4 PM.
