(MIAMI) A Florida doctor was arrested in connection to the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse for allegedly enlisting Colombian mercenaries to murder the embattled president, according to Axios.

Christian Emmanuel Sanon, 63, became the third Haitian-born suspect connected to the U.S. alleged to have been a part of the July 7 murder of Moïse, whose presidency was shrouded in protests and accusations of growing authoritarian-rule.

Léon Charles, Haiti's national police chief, said on Sunday that Sanon "arrived by private plane in June with political objectives and contacted a private security firm to recruit the people who committed this act," including the U.S.-based Venezuelan security firm, CTU.

"The initial mission that was given to these assailants was to protect the individual named Emmanuel Sanon but afterward the mission changed," Charles added, arguing the "key suspect" wanted to be president.

The Washington Post reports Sanon's arrest came as the FBI and Department of Homeland Security traveled to Haiti to aid in the aftermath of Moïse's killing.

Authorities have now arrested 18 Colombians and three Haitian Americans, including Sanon, since last week.
