(LONG ISLAND, N.Y.) The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory Tuesday for Nassau County and the western half of Suffolk County.
Temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s and low 100s, prompting the issuance of the heat advisory, which is due to end Wednesday at 8 p.m.
The weather agency warned residents that "hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur" and advised southeast New Yorkers to stay indoors in air conditioning, check up on elderly or other vulnerable friends, family and neighbors and to call 911 in case of heatstroke.
Heatstroke symptoms typically include high body temperature, rapid breathing, a racing heart flushed skin, nausea and altered mental state or behavior.
According to Patch, a heavy rain forecast for Wednesday is expected to break the heat wave.
Nassau County has opened three cooling centers for any residents struggling to beat the heat.
The weather service also issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the New York metropolitan area; the watch ends at 10 p.m. Tuesday.
