(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) Amid ongoing heavy rainfall across the New York metropolitan area, the Suffolk County Health Department issued an advisory Friday against bathing at 64 beaches over elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

The affected beaches are located in areas with significant stormwater runoff that don't experience as much tidal flushing due to enclosed embayments. Until the affected beaches can experience enough water turnover to flush out the bacteria, the department recommends avoiding all water contact.

The department plans to lift the advisory Saturday at 9 p.m. — enough time for two tidal cycles once the rain has stopped — unless testing still reveals elevated levels of bacteria.

The affected beaches can be seen on this interactive map and listed below.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach Hotline at 631-852-5822.
