(QUEENS, N.Y.) A man was critically injured in a hit-and-run collision in Queens on Wednesday, according to CBS 2 New York.

The New York City Police Department identified the victim as a 21-year-old. The man underwent severe head trauma and is in critical condition at a local hospital.

The incident took place just after 9 p.m. near the corner of Astoria Boulevard and 98th Street in the East Elmhurst section of the borough.

Surveillance footage captured three men who were crossing the street when a silver SUV ran a red light, police said.

Two men managed to avoid the vehicle, but one man was critically hit.

Witnesses at the scene were still distraught by the incident on Thursday, per CBS 2.

“Some car hit the guy, and the guy like flipped in the street, all the way to the bus stop,” witness Algabyali Ali said. “I feel so bad. This accident is so bad, and the guy, he has a family, maybe he’s got kids.”

Ali, a local deli worker near the intersection, made the call to 911. He and others at the scene tried to assist the 21-year-old, who was unresponsive and transported to the hospital.

Ali told CBS 2 he tried to run after the SUV, which fled from the scene. He recorded cellphone footage of the incident in which the vehicle was reportedly seen turning the corner.

“The problem, the guy, he drive. He hit the human, he hit the man in the street. Maybe he’s gonna lose his life, and he run away. Why you run?” Ali said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or by messaging on Twitter @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
